A method, system, or device to determine when media content has been displayed. The method can include receiving a unique identifier (UID) and fingerprint for a media segment. The method can also include determining a media segment ID for the media segment, generating and submitting a query for the media segment ID in a record database, determining that the media segment ID is not stored in the record database, and identifying an overlay content segment ID. The method can include generating and submitting for the overlay content segment ID in the record database, determining it is not stored in an entry, sending the overlay content segment to the electronic device, and receiving a notification from the electronic device.

1. An overlay content server device comprising:
a first network connection to a television executing a first automatic content recognition (ACR) system, wherein the television is to receive media content that comprises a plurality of media segments from a content source device over a second network connection between the content source device and the television, wherein the first ACR system generates a fingerprint for a media segment of the plurality of media segments, and wherein the television comprises a unique identifier (UID); a third network connection to a record database that stores entries of media segment identifiers (ID); and a processing device coupled to the first network and the third network, the processing device to:
receive one of the fingerprints and the UID from the television via the first network connection;determine a media segment ID for the media segment using the fingerprint;generate and submit a query for the media segment ID in the record database via the second network connection;determine that media segment ID is not stored in the entries of the record database;send a first notification to the television via the first network connection when the media segment ID is not stored in the record database, the first notification instructing the television to display the media segment; andreceive a second notification from the television indicating that the media segment has been displayed on the television with the associated UID;send a first request to the record database to create an entry for the media segment ID with the UID via the third network connection.
