The method involves transmitting transmit pulses (10) in surrounding and receiving the pulses as receiving pulses (18) by a transceiver e.g. ultrasonic transducer. A transfer component (12) of transfer characteristics is detected. The detected component is assigned to another transfer component (14) of another transfer characteristics, where the latter component is produced from comparison of transmit pulses and received pulses. Transfer characteristics (20) of the transceiver are provided based on the latter component.
