A multi-mode breast x-ray imaging system comprises a tube arm assembly comprising an x-ray source, and a compression arm assembly. The compression arm assembly comprises a face shield and an x-ray receptor. The face shield is positioned generally between the x ray source and the x-ray receptor. The x-ray source and x-ray receptor are configured to generate images using at least two imaging modes. At least one imaging procedure is executed differently in each of the at least two imaging modes and the at least two imaging modes are temporally spaced. The x-ray source moves relative to the compression arm assembly in one of the at least two imaging modes.
