[Class 69 (ii).] Control mechanism for the coupling described in Specification 353,440 comprises means for admitting liquid to the hydraulic slip coupling, and subsequently, when the driven shaft has attained a predetermined speed, to the friction coupling, the slip coupling being emptied after the engagement of the friction coupling. When the coupling is to be engaged, pressure liquid is admitted to the pipe 1, Fig. 3, and passes through valves 2, 3 to a servomotor 4 to open a valve 5, so that a vacuum in the coupling casing 22 causes liquid to be sucked through a pipe 6 and passage 8 into the coupling. When the driven member of the coupling has attained a predetermined speed, a governor 11 opens a valve 12, so that liquid passes from the pipe 1 to a servomotor 14 to open a valve 15 to permit liquid to be sucked through a pipe 16 and passage 17 to a space 19, to cause the friction coupling to be engaged. After the engagement of the latter, the valve 3 is closed, causing a spring to close the valve 5, and the slip coupling is emptied by a vacuum connection at 25 and a waste water pump connection at 26. Should the vacuum in the casing at 22 fail, the pressure in the casing acts through a servomotor 27 to operate a valve 29, so that pressure water passes through 'nozzles 36, 37 and supplies the necessary liquid to the coupling by injector action. A member 43 actuates a valve 44 so that lubricant is supplied for a limited time to the friction coupling at engagement or disengagement. In a plant comprising a turbine T, Fig. 1, motor generator MG, coupling C, and pump P, the turbine and pump valves are connected to the valves 2, 3, so that the latter are closed when the former are open. |
