A column tail lift for a vehicle comprises a platform 9 suspended from runners 5 which slide in vertical columns 4 attached to the vehicle. The platform 9 is also slidable horizontally with respect to the runners 5 so that it can be stowed beneath the vehicle floor when not in use. A latch, (15, figure 4) preferably comprising a pair of shoot bolts, is provided to retain the platform 9 in the stowed and deployed positions as required. The latch is operated by a single control device 13-16, preferably a finger operated trigger. The horizontal sliding is enabled by rollers 7 mounted on the runners 4, and running along channels 8 on either side of the platform 9, comprising means to prevent disengagement of the rollers. In the stowed position, the platform protrudes from the edge of the vehicle floor 3, and there are means to mitigate this and allow the vehicle to reverse easily, such as an extension in the floor of the vehicle corresponding to a recess in the platform. |
