PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of detecting an accurate toner adhesion amount to set an optimal image forming condition, even when the conditions on the surface of the toner is changed such as the adhesion amount of an external additive; and an image forming apparatus.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes toner adhesion amount detection means 43 provided with a light emitting element 431 irradiating an intermediate transfer belt 41 with light, a light receiving element 432P receiving P-wave light, and a light receiving element 432S receiving S-wave light, respectively from the light radiated from the light emitting element 431 and reflected on the intermediate transfer belt 41. A method of setting image forming condition includes detecting the surface state of toner particles from an output value of the light receiving element 432P; and determining the toner adhesion amount of a toner image patch 204 from the correlation having been determined in advance between a toner adhesion amount and a difference in detection value between the light receiving element 432P and light receiving element 432S for each surface state of toner particles. |
