PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that, because only light intensity information or phase information on an optical signal of each wavelength is treated as a factor for carrying information in an optical communication system employing the WDM technology, although a method of increasing the number of wavelengths to be multiplexed, or a method using a high-speed optical transmitter-receiver, or a method using an advanced optical transmission system such as multi-value modulation is employed in the case that further increase in speed of the optical communication system is desired, in these methods, a system configuration is further complicated, and high functionalization of individual devices is required, which causes increase in cost of the entire system.SOLUTION: An optical transmission system using a wavelength variable light source for a light source of an optical transmitter can achieve further increase in speed and capacity by adding information to a wavelength component as well as a light intensity component. The wavelength variable light source outputs continuous wave (CW) light having a state related to the wavelength and corresponding to bits of a transmitted modulation signal. |
