The protection uses at least one airbag (7), which is mounted in the seat (1) of a motor vehicle, and which can emerge on activation through a rip-seam (19) in the seat cover (5,6), in order to provide side protection for the occupant. The seam has a reduced load capacity in comparison with adjacent seams, at least in the region of a predetermined exit point for the airbag. The rip-seam may have a 20 to 65 percent lower load capacity, and this may be especially 25 to 50 percent lower. The region of reduced load capacity may extend on at least one side of the exit point, and may end at a butt-joint with an adjacent seam, or with the edge of the seat cover. |
