A mobile communications terminal is arranged to communicate user data via an uplink random access channel (RACH) by transmitting one or more random access messages at a selected timing within the uplink RACH, the timing being selected by the terminal to represent at least part of the data. Upon receipt of the random access messages by a base station, a determination is made as to whether data is communicated via the random access messages. The selected timing may involve selecting a subset of available sub-frames for message transmission, i.e. the data is encoded using RACH message positioning amongst sub-frames. Data may also be encoded using preamble positioning within RACH messages. The terminal may send a capability message to the base station, the message including an indication of the capability of the terminal for sending data via the RACH. The terminal may be a machine type communication (MTC) terminal. |
