An obstacle detection device is equipped with: a transmission/receiving unit (11) for transmitting a transmission wave and receiving an ultrasonic wave, and installed in a vehicle; a transmission control unit (14); a receiving circuit unit (13) for detecting the signal level of the received wave; a distance calculation unit (15) for consecutively calculating the time at which the transmission wave was transmitted and the distance to an object that reflected the transmission wave; a storage unit (22) for storing the distance to the object; an obstacle determination unit (26) for determining whether the object is an obstacle or not; and a receiving level observation unit (16) for observing the signal level of the received wave prior to transmission of the transmission wave. Furthermore, when the signal level of the received wave exceeds a prescribed threshold, the obstacle determination unit sets a first determination data number, which is the data number for the distance to the object and used in the determination of whether the object is an obstacle or not, to an increased determination number greater than a second determination data number for cases when the signal level of the received wave does not exceed the prescribed threshold, for the duration of a prescribed interval.
