Provided is a starter capable of appropriately transferring the torque of an engine and reducing vibrations and noises when being operated. The starter has a reduction gear mechanism 2 for reducing the rotational speed of a motor shaft 12 and a case member 81 for accommodating the reduction gear mechanism, and is provided with a plurality of different contact sections between the outer circumference of the reduction gear mechanism and the inner circumference of the case member, wherein at least a first contact section 27 and a second contact section 28 of the plurality of contact sections are provided at different positions in the axial direction.
