Means for pressing together and sealing a longitudinal overlapping seam in the production of a continuous tube or cylinder from a sheet or strip material includes two co-operating rollers acting as a pressure roller and a backing roller respectively, in which the pressure roller is journalled in one end of a link member for rotation about its own axis, the link member being provided at its other end with a universal joint support and carrying a further roller arranged to transfer operative pressure to the pressure roller. In the arrangement shown, 10 indicates a part of the machine frame supporting an upper shaping element 12 and a lower shaping element 14 between which is located a heating unit 16 for heating the overlapping edges of the sheet material. A bracket 18 is attached to frame 10 and supports a feed tube 20 for the supply of pourable material into packages simultaneously with their formation. The packaging material 22 is formed into a tube by the shaping elements 12 and 14, each of which is provided with a ring of concave rollers 24 contacting the outside of the tube. One of these'concave rollers 24 of the lower member 14 and indicated at 24a serves as a backing roller in the process of pressing and sealing the seam. A pressure roller 26 operates in conjunction with the backing roller 24a and is carried by a lower forked end 28 of a link member 30 having its upper end journalled by means of a universal joint in a housing 36 supported on feed tube 20, the whole being covered by a cover 38. The link 30 also carries a roller 42 which is arranged to bear against a cam or guide surface 44 of the housing 36. Pressure is exerted between the roller 24a and the roller 26 by applying a force to the bracket 18 which is carried on a pivot pin 46, such that the end of the bracket connected to the pipe 20 is forced downwardly. This force is transmitted to the pressure roller 26 by the supply pipe 20, housing 36 roller 42 and link member 30. |
