801,502. Primary batteries. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Sept. 13, 1956 [Sept. 15, 1955], No. 27955/56. Class 53. The shelf life of a dry cell having a consumable metal anode, an insoluble cathode and an electrolyte-wet depolariser is improved by incorporating in the cell a compound having the structural formula R-O(R<SP>1</SP>O)n-R<SP>11</SP>, where R represents an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical, R<SP>1</SP> represents an alkylene radical, R<SP>11</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group and n is any number from 1 to 50. Preferred compounds are paraphenyl phenoxy polyethylene glycol, made by the addition of 13 equivalents of ethylene oxide to 1 equivalent of paraphenyl phenol, and an alkylphenol polyglycol ether known as Neutronyx-600, made by the addition of 9¢ mols. of ethylene oxide to 1 mol. of paranonyphenol, but other compounds are also referred to in the Specification. The compound is preferably mixed with mercury and may be incorporated in the electrolyte, in the depolarizer mix or preferably in the separator: |
