An image pickup apparatus equipped with a zoom lens with a bent optical path comprising: a zoom lens including a reflecting member having a reflecting surface that bends the optical path; and an image pickup element disposed on the image side of the zoom lens and having an image pickup surface that receives an image formed by the zoom lens and converts it to an electrical signal, wherein the zoom lens comprises, in order from the object side to the image side, a first lens unit including the reflecting member and having a negative refractive power, a second lens unit having a positive refractive power, a third lens unit having a negative refractive power, and a fourth lens unit having a positive refractive power, during zooming from the wide angle end to the telephoto end, the second lens unit moves closer to the first lens unit only toward the object side, the distance between the second lens unit and the third lens unit changes, and the distance between the third lens unit and the fourth lens unit changes, the first lens unit comprises, in order from the object side to the image side along the optical axis, a negative single lens having a negative refractive power, the reflecting member, and a positive single lens having a positive refractive power and having a meniscus shape with a convex surface facing the object side, the total number of non-cemented lenses in the first lens unit is two, and the reflecting member is a reflecting prism having a flat entrance surface and a flat exit surface, and the zoom lens satisfies the following conditional expression (9): 3.3<ft/fw<15.0  (9), where ft is the focal length of the zoom lens at the telephoto end, fw is the focal length of the zoom lens at the wide angle end.
