A bearing assembly 11 comprises a bearing, e.g. a ball-bearing for a substantially verticallymounted shaft 10, a lower chamber 27 to which may drain lubricant from the bearing, and a further lower chamber 32 having a rotatable wall 34 with an inner surface as shown, on to which a tube 33 delivers lubricant from the chamber 27 and up which lubricant travels for return to the bearing on rotation of the wall 34. Bearing balls 12, a cage 13, inner and outer races 14, 25 and the chambers 27, 32 are within a housing 15, parts 20, 21 of which are connected to a fixed structure, other parts 15, 16 being secured to the shaft 10, labyrinth seals being at 23 and 24. The parts 15 and 16 are located against a ring 17, threaded on to the shaft 10, and a shoulder 18 on the shaft 10, respectively. An upper chamber 26 above the balls 12, communicating therewith through a space 30, is supplied with lubricant through a pipe 28. In the form shown the bearing assembly is a thrust bearing and the journalled shaft 10 carries the compressor and turbine of a gas-turbine engine. |
