A damper system for a rotor, comprising: a magnetic coupling configured to magnetically engage a rotor supported by one or more primary bearings, the magnetic coupling including a first magnet and a second magnet, the first magnet coupled to the rotor and configured to rotate therewith; and a damper including a piston coupled to the magnetic coupling, the damper being substantially non-load bearing and configured to damp the rotor such that the damper system resists radial movement of the rotor, wherein the second magnet is coupled to or forms at least a portion of the piston, and the first magnet and the second magnet are configured to apply radially opposing forces at radially opposing points around the rotor such that no net force is applied to the rotor when the rotor is centered in the damper system.
