972,704. Welding by pressure. ASSOCIATED SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURERS Ltd. May 9, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 22185/60. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In making a sealed container a tubular header member 20 bent back upon itself with a glass or like seal 30 in the inner tubular part 22 thereof is formed with an outwardlydirected flange at the end of the outer tubular part 23 thereof, an outwardly-directed flange on a metal cover member 10 is pressure-welded to the flange on the header member by two tools 50, 60 having ring-like pressure faces 52, 62 which are at a small angle to one another so that the distance between them increases in an outward direction. The stamped copper header has a thinned portion 25 where the portion 22 is bent back on the portion 23 and the portion 22 is filled with a lead glass 30 supporting leads 31 of a transistor 40. With the transistor in position the flange on the copper cover 10, which cover may be grease filled, is placed on the flange on the header and these are welded between the faces 52, 62 of the tools. The header is held in position by a spring plunger 51 gripping the leads 31. Metal is caused by the inclined tool face to be extruded outwardly and hollows are formed inwardly of the tools. The extruded metal is cropped and rolled to the shape at 21. |
