1,046,804. Batteries. VARTAA.G. July 23, 1963 [July 28, 1962], No. 29227/63. Heading H1B. A set of electrode plates 1 . . . 4 joined in series by connectors 5, 6, 7 (Fig. 1) are rolled together to form a stack (Fig. 2) by bending each connector through two 90-degree bends, all the bends being in the same direction. A strap 8 secured to the last plate 4 is spot welded at 9 to the penultimate connector 6 to prevent unrolling of the stack. In manufacture the set of plates 1 . . . 4 is interleaved with a set of plates 1<SP>1</SP> . . . 41 of opposite polarity (Fig. 3) the connectors of set 1 . . . 4 being in a plane perpendicular to the connectors of set 1<SP>1</SP> . . . 4<SP>1</SP>. Separators in the form of flat sheets between the electrodes or envelopes for each set of electrodes may be provided. The connectors may be coated with an electrolyte resistant insulating lacquer or synthetic resin. The assembly shown in Fig. 3 may be incorporated in a gastight button cell. Exposed surfaces may be provided on the negative electrodes to absorb oxygen upon over-charging. Likewise surfaces of the positive electrodes may be exposed to prevent polarity reversal on excessive discharge. |
