A gas lighter comprises a cylindrical casing 1 formed with a fuel reservoir 2 and a central peg 3 through which the fuel passes up a nylon wick 19 to a valve 14 secured in its upper end. The valve is formed with a screw threaded axially adjustable inner sleeve 21, Fig. 3 (not shown) which compresses a porous pad 20 within the valve. To open the valve a needle 28 is raised against the action of a spring 29, Fig. 3, by a cross-member 35 of a control member 34 engaged under a split ring 39 mounted in a groove on the needle. Clips 36, 37 of the control member engage the sides of the casing 1 and the cross-member 35 is lifted by thrusting upwards clip 36 until its lower end engages a shoulder 41 of a bearing face 6 (dot-dash lines). Pressure on the clip 37 will return the control member to its inoperative position. A cap 8 rotatable with respect to the casing carries a flint wheel 10 and a flint tube 11 which projects into the annular space between casing 1 and peg 3 and passes through a disc 23 engaged on a head 24 solid with sleeve 21. Rotation of the cap alters the compression of the porous pad thereby varying the flame height. The valve 14, Fig. 3 (not shown) comprises an outer 15, the base of which is provided with an off-centre hole 18, and in which is located the porous pad 20. Inner sleeve 21 screw threaded into the outer sleeve is formed in its base with a nozzle 25 on which is located a rubber pad 31 compressed by the burner 28. Spring 29 acts on the burner so as to keep the nozzle 25 closed until control member 34 raises the burner to allow gas to flow into the burner passage 32. |
