A homeoporous solid carbon body (pores of substantially uniform size) is produced by compacting substantially binder-free carbonaceous material to give a green compact, the particles of the material, which consist of cellulose capable of bonding to adjacent particles upon carbonization, having a substantially uniform grain size, and carbonizing the green compact whereby a homeoporous solid body having a peak in the pore size distribution curve in the range from 0.3 to 10Á is obtained. The carbonaceous material may be microcrystalline cellulose. Compaction pressures from 10 to 3000 Kg/cm.<SP>2</SP> may be used and carbonization may be effected by heating up to 1000‹ C. A polar liquid, volatile at the carbonizing temperature, e.g. water or an alcohol, may be added to the particulate material in amounts from 10-30% by weight of the particulate material. The grain size of the particulate starting material may be 10-50 microns. The carbonized body may be impregnated with a carbonaceous material, e.g. pitch, or a synthetic plastics material such as a phenolformaldehyde resin, a furan resin or an acetone condensation product, and the impregnant carbonized in the pores of the body. The body may finally be graphitized. |
