A pipe 200 comprises a pipe wall 202 formed of a composite material of a matrix and a plurality of reinforcing fibres embedded within the matrix. At least one longitudinal section 204 of the pipe wall 202 defines a local variation in construction providing a variation in a property of the pipe 200. The variation provides a behavioural characteristic of the pipe 200 to facilitate improved measurement at the at least one longitudinal section 204 by a measuring device. The variation may permit focusing or exaggeration of movement. The behavioural characteristic may include bending, axial expansion or contraction, buckling and/or radial expansion. The variation may provide a desired energy absorption characteristic, a desired acoustic characteristic, a desired resonant characteristic, a desired thermal expansion characteristic and/or a desired thermal insulation characteristic. The variation may be provided by use of an insert. The pipe may be used in the extraction of hydrocarbons, as part of a riser, flow line and/or a jumper, at subsea and/or subterranean and/or for coupling end-to-end to a pipe comprising a pipe wall formed of metal. |
