PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an automatic transmission capable of preventing elongation of shifting time, and mitigating shifting shocks. SOLUTION: In the controller, an oil pressure Pa wherein an input shaft rotational frequency N<SB>T</SB>variation is predicted before actual shifting causing variation in the input shaft rotational frequency N<SB>T</SB>, an oil pressure command value P<SB>B1</SB>*n is sampled when (t12-t13) sweeping down the oil pressure command value P<SB>B1</SB>of an oil pressure of a brake B-1 to be released, and an inclinationΔP<SB>B1</SB>*n of the oil pressure command value P<SB>B1</SB>is controlled based on an input torque and a sampled oil pressure control value P<SB>B1</SB>*n such that it becomes large during sweep and smaller as predicted starting of rotation variation of an input shaft approaches. By this, in comparison to the case of sweeping at a certain inclination, a time TA of sweep control is shortened, rising of the input shaft rotational frequency N<SB>T</SB>after starting shifting becomes gradual, and an engagement shock of a one-way clutch is mitigated.
