A load carrier comprises a support having at least one wheel at one end and a handle at an opposing end, an energy store, means for charging the store with energy derived from downward movement of the carrier, for example down stairs, and means for using the stored energy to assist in upward movement, for example up stairs. The load carrier is preferably a suitcase or a trolley for carrying a suitcase. The energy store preferably includes a mechanical helical spring, housed in a compartment in or next to the base of the suitcase, and attached to a wire that can be wound around a roller thereby tensioning the spring. The load carrier may further incorporate an adjustable traction device hinging from a stowed to a deployed position in which it is held by a supporting stay and defines a triangular configuration with the stay and the support. The traction device may also include a continuous flexible track, and flaps facilitating movement in the forward direction. |
