PURPOSE: A backlight unit and a liquid crystal display device having the same are provided to maximize light efficiency by opposing the exit face and of the light emitting diode and the entrance face of the light guide plate. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit comprises a bottom cover(170), a flexible printed circuit board(151), light emitting diodes(150), a light guide plate(140), and reflective sheets(161,163). The bottom cover has a stepped portion. The flexible printed circuit board contacts the inner surface corresponding to the stepped portion of the bottom cover. The light emitting diodes are embedded in the flexible printed circuit board. The light guide plate is arranged on the same plane as the light emitting diode. The reflective sheets are attached to the lower surface of the light guide plate, corresponding to the stepped portion of the bottom cover.
