When printing plates are exchanged in a printer (1), the plate mounting portions (37a, 37b, 37c and 37d) of individual printing drums (32a, 32b, 32c and 32d) turn to the positions where they confront plate exchanging devices (35a, 35b, 35c and 35d). When the exchanges of the printing plates are ended, moreover, the individual printing drums (32a, 32b, 32c and 32d) turn so that the individual plate mounting portions (37a, 37b, 37c and 37d) may have predetermined phase differences. The actions of the printing drums (32a, 32b, 32c and 32d) before exchanging the printing plates are performed at the time of washing blanket drums (33a, 33b, 33c and 33d), and the actions of the printing drums (32a, 32b, 32c and 32d) after the printing plates are exchanged are performed simultaneously with an inking operation.
