<p>This invention provides a plasma display panel with a protective film, which can reduce the amount of adsorption of impurity gas on the protective film while maintaining good secondary electron release properties. The protective film has a double layer structure comprising a main protective film formed of a magnesium oxide film having (111) orientation and an upper protective film formed of a magnesium oxide film having a higher film density than the main protective film. In the plasma display panel comprising a pair of opposed substrate, a discharge space provided between the pair of substrates, and a protective film provided on the outermost surface in contact with the discharge space on the inner face of one of the substrates. The protective film comprises a main protective film as a (111) oriented film of magnesium oxide, and an upper protective film which is formed so as to cover the main protective film and is a magnesium oxide film having a higher film density than the main protective film.</p>
