A seatbelt device for a motor vehicle has a belt strap (30) which is connected to the vehicle by means of fastening devices. It is proposed to provide at least one optical waveguide (10) on or in the belt strap (30), the optical waveguide being optically coupled to a light-emitting element. This arrangement can be used both for measuring purposes relating to the state of the belt strap and also for passing on information.
