PURPOSE: A high pressure discharge lamp lighting device and projector are provided to suppress arc jump and blackening of a light emitting tube. CONSTITUTION: A high voltage discharging lamp(10) includes a reflection mirror. An electricity supply device(30) supplies power to the high voltage discharging lamp. A controller(31) controls the driving state of a protector. A light modulation element is made of a liquid crystal device. An enlarging device(33) enlarges an image displayed on the light modulation element.
