PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the possible operating current of a superconducting coil that uses a tape-like superconducting wire by preventing a critical current from dropping by means of applying a magnetic field roughly parallel to a broad surface of the superconducting wire without enlarging the coil as a whole or making it difficult to manufacture the coil. SOLUTION: At least a part of the superconducting wire has a circular, semicircular, elliptical or polygonal cross-sectional shape, the superconducting wire consisting of a base 1, a superconducting layer 3 and a stabilized layer 2. The superconducting wire is so formed that the direction of the broad surface of the superconducting layer is held in a predetermined direction with respect to the axis of a winding frame 5 depending on the portion within the coil.
