PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus including a zoom lens of a type which reflects an optical path, the apparatus that is advantageous for slimming of the image pickup apparatus. SOLUTION: The image pickup apparatus 40 includes a zoom lens frame unit 51, and an image pickup element 49 having an image pickup surface, which receives an image formed by the zoom lens frame unit and converts it into an electric signal, and satisfies conditional expressions (1) to (3): conditional expression (1) Lv1Er<Lv1EL<0.49; conditional expression (2) 0.93<Lv1Ef/IHs; and conditional expression (3) Lv1Ef/Lv1Er<0.99; provided that Lv1Er denotes a length of an area of a rear side measured from an optical axis along a reference surface, in an effective area of the object-side lens surface of an object-side lens in a first zoom lens group; Lv1EL denotes a length of an area measured along a direction perpendicular to the reference surface including the optical axis, in the effective area; Lv1Ef denotes a length of an area of a front side measured from the optical axis along the reference surface, in the effective area; and IHs denotes the maximum image height in a direction along the reference surface in the effective image pickup area.
