PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing alkenes biologically.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing terminal alkenes by enzymatic decarboxylation of 3-hydroxyalkanoate molecules with an enzyme having decarboxylation activity. In one embodiment, a cofactor represented by the general formula R-O-POH-CH-POH, preferably derived from a family of methylene diphosphonate monoesters is added to the reaction. At least one of the two substituents on carbon 2 of the alkene is a straight or branched alkyl. There are provided a method for converting 3-hydroxybutylate to propylene, a method for converting 3-hydroxyvalerate to 1-butylene, a method for converting 3-hydroxy-3-butyrate to isobutylene and a method for converting 3-hydroxy-3-methylvalerate to isoamylene. The enzymatic systems and microbial strains used and products obtained are also provided. |
