[Class 18.] In apparatus for making paper cartons or cardboard boxes in which a former 3 forces a blank z through a shaping channel 6 and folds it into U-shape and rollers or discs 8 having cut-away parts then engage the lower projecting side parts c to fold them against the sides of the former, the rollers or discs are driven at a greater peripheral speed than the speed of the former so that sharp corners are produced ; the parts d projecting from the bottom of the former are subsequently folded against the sides thereof by rollers 21 and the upper projecting side parts e are then folded down upon them by members 22. If the cut-away portions x of the rollers or discs are straight, the rollers are driven at a non-uniform speed and after the lower projecting side parts are folded at a higher speed, the speed is reduced so that the projecting bottom parts of the blanks are not pressed from beyond the bottom of the former. As shown the formers 3 are carried by an endless chain 2 passing on wheels 1 and the rollers 8 are driven by elliptical gearing from one of the wheels. If the cut-away parts of the rollers or discs are made curved, they may be run at a uniform speed. |
