The invention provides a camera base for a video conference system. The camera base can be detachably electrically and mechanically connected with one or more second cameras, and comprises: a first camera configured to capture a first video of a wide image of a video conference environment, a communication interface configured to enable the camera base and the video conference system to be in communication connection with the one or more second cameras, and a processing unit operatively coupled to the first camera and the communication interface. The processing unit can be programmed to execute the following steps: based on the characteristics of the first video, determining a viewing image; generating a first control signal, and sending the first control signal to control the one or more second cameras to capture a second video of the viewing image; and outputting the second video. The invention also provides a corresponding video conference method.
