Disclosed are cyclodextrin-based metal organic frameworks comprising a metal cation and cyclodextrin or a cyclodextrin derivative. These metal organic frameworks are permanently porous and capable of molecule storage.

1. A method of making a cyclodextrin-based metal organic framework comprising a metal cation and a cyclodextrin or a cyclodextrin derivative, the method comprising:
a) dissolving the cyclodextrin or the cyclodextrin derivative and an alkali metal salt in a first solvent; and b) allowing slow vapor diffusion of a second solvent in which either of the cyclodextrin or the cyclodextrin, or the alkali metal salt has poor solubility.
