Disclosed is an animal monitoring system. The system comprises an inert bolus body adapted to allow oral administration to a ruminant animal and an animal monitoring device having a location inside the inert bolus body. The animal monitoring device includes at least one sensor (9/57), a sensor signal encoder, a radio frequency signal generator, a network frequency match element (118), an antenna (90) and a power source. The at least one sensor (9/57) generates a signal which varies in relation to change in a sensed animal characteristic. The sensor signal encoder encodes the signal generated by the at least one sensor (9/57) as encoded sensed animal characteristic information. The radio frequency signal generator generates a radio frequency signal capable of carrying the encoded sensed animal characteristic information. The network frequency match element (118) compensates for change is said radio frequency signal passing through the mass of said ruminant animal. The antenna (90) transmits the radio frequency signal and the power source which supplies power to the animal monitoring device. |
