There is disclosed a method of operating a system for monitoring a device via a network, the system being operable to extract status data from at least one data file accessible on the monitored device using at least one communication protocol, the system including at least one software object, each software object being associated with a respective communication protocol, and the method comprising: accessing a database to obtain vendor and model data related to the monitored device; for the or each software object: obtaining, in dependence on the vendor and model data, a reference to a software function for extracting the status data using the respective communication protocol, and storing in the software object the vendor and model data and the reference to the software function; and providing status data from the monitored device by invoking the software function corresponding to the reference stored in the or each software object.
