PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple purification method for optically activeα-trifluoromethyl lactate that is useful as an effective intermediate for optically active medicine or optically active agrochemical. SOLUTION: The optically activeα-trifluoromethyl lactate that is represented by formula (I) (wherein * indicates an asymmetric carbon) is recrystallized by using one kind of solvent or a mixed solvent including plural kinds of solvents selected from the group consisting of aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent, ether solvent, ester solvent, ketone solvent, acetonitrile, and N,N-dimethylformamide, then the optical purity-improved portion is collected, namely the precipitated crystal or the mother liquor residue.
