PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zoom lens having a desired zoom ratio and high optical performance though it is constituted of a comparatively small number of lenses. SOLUTION: The zoom lens has a first lens group comprising one negative lens and a plurality of lens groups in order from an object side to an image side. The total number of lenses in the entire system of the zoom lens is set to be equal to or under five. When the Abbe number of the material of the negative lens in the first lens group is defined asνd1, the position of an exit pupil at a wide angle end is defined as tkw, and the entire length of the lens at the wide angle end is defined as tlw, the zoom lens satisfies conditions; 58<νd1 and 0.10<¾tkw/tlw¾<0.70.
