PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a conventional disk array not constructed by combining disk devices having different reliability for the disk devices themselves. SOLUTION: A disk array is provided with a drive management means serving as a program identifying the type of a disk device and managing different disk devices separately and a drive management table storing information used by the drive management means. The disk array is also provided with means serving as programs managing an accumulation time of the disk device. These means are a drive lifetime setting means setting a lifetime of a drive, a drive starting/stopping means starting/stopping an ATA disk device according to a plan, and an operation time measurement means measuring an accumulation time of operation. In construction of a RAID, a drive type notification means serving as a program notifying the type of the disk device in construction of the RAID is arranged since awareness about difference in reliability and performance of the disk device is necessary.
