PURPOSE:To decrease the end breakage frequency and yarn unevenness in a high-speed spinning of a polyester fiber, by using a housing having a specific length, covering the region from the surface of a spinneret to the upper face of a cooling gas blasting opening with the housing and supplying the housing with a gas at a flow rate over a specific level. CONSTITUTION:Spinning of a polyester fiber having a single fiber fineness of <=1.5 de is carried out at a spinning speed of >=5,500m/min. In the above process, the length L of the housing covering the region from the surface of a spinneret to the upper face of a cooling gas blasting opening is selected to satisfy the formula 300<=L<=400Xd (d is denier). A polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate is extruded through said spinneret into the housing and a gas such as air is supplied to the housing from the above cooling apparatus at a flow rate of >=5l/min. The gas stream in the housing can be straightened and the spun yarn is slowly cooled by this apparatus to decrease the end breakage frequency and yarn unevenness.
