PURPOSE:To enhance the corrosion resistance of a muffler by providing in a muffler main body consisting of Al-material a reactant layer consisting of carbonate of alkaline earth metal, which is used to render harmless the com pound sulfate that is deleterious material quickening the corrosion of the muffler main body. CONSTITUTION:A muffler consisting of Al-plated steel plate is provided with a muffler main body 1, in which a plurality of resonance chambers 3... are partitioned by partitioning walls 2.... The muffler main body 1 is provided with an inlet pipe 4 and an outlet pipe 5 for exhaust gas, while each partitioning wall 2 is provided with a connecting pipe 6, which connects a resonance chamber 3 to another resonance chamber 3. In this case, a reactant layer 7, which reacts with the compound sulfate, or a deleterious material quickening the corrosion of the muffler main body 1, to render the compound harmless, is provided at a place, which is a part of an inner bottom of the muffler main body 1 and which does not hinder the exhaust gas from being circulated, in such a manner that the layer 7 is wrapped with an about 200-mesh, heat resisting wire gauze 8. In this case, carbonate of alkaline earth metal such as calcium carbonate is used as the reactant material 7.
