A magnetic field generating assembly for use in NMR apparatus comprises a pair of first magnets (1, 2) with lines joining north-south poles of the magnets positioned along an axis with like poles facing one another. A pair of second magnets (3, 4) are positioned with lines joining their north-south poles substantially parallel with the axis. The positions and field strengths of the magnets (1, 2, 3, 4) are chosen so that a resultant field of controlled characteristics suitable for an NMR experiment is generated. The field (9) is generated in a working volume (8) spaced from the assembly. The magnets (1, 2, 3, 4) of the assembly are relatively adjustable along the axis. |
