[Class 141] [Also in Group VIII] An article of hosiery has a seamless, circular-knit, self-supporting top comprising (a) a rib-knit portion and (b) a contiguous plainknit portion having the same number of stitches per course as the ribknit portion and having elastic (e.g. rubber) thread incorporated coursewise in courses thereof. During knitting of portion (b) the elastic thread may be fed under tension to contract the portion to substantially the same diameter as portion (a). The elastic thread may be locked at spaced wales and floated on the inner face of the fabric between the locking points. The tension may draw portion (b) into vertical rib-like ridges which may form approximate continuations of the ribs of portion (a), e.g. if the elastic thread is locked at alternate wales and the portion (a) is a 1:1 rib fabric. The top may be knitted separately (and attached to the leg by stitching &c.) or integrally. The top may comprise alternate bands of (a) and (b) and the last course may be plain or rib. The portions (a) and (b) may be knit of the same thread-e.g. on a superposed double-cylinder machine having doubleended transferable needles. Fig. 4 shows a stocking top having rib-knit portions 209 and plain-knit portions 202. The portions 202 and the plain-knit welt 207 contain elastic thread 203, 207a. In modification, (a) a tubular welt, which may contain elastic threads, adjoins a rib-knit portion, and (b) the welt is replaced by a selvage consisting of an elastic thread running through loops of plain knitting.
