The device (4) has a seat belt extender (16) comprising a guide unit (20) e.g. flexible guide rod, and a belt trapping device (22) arranged at the guide unit. A drive unit is provided for moving the guide unit of the belt extender between retracted and extended positions, and a set of sensors is provided for detection of a number of sensor signals. A control device (17) is connected with the sensors and the drive unit. The control device controls the drive unit for moving the guide unit based on the sensor signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting a seat belt extender of a four-door motor vehicle.
