The generator has gas generator housing (2) in which a chamber (6) for accommodating a propellant (7) is provided for ignition of a main gas unit that is provided in a chamber (9). An ignition device is provided for ignition of the propellant. The chamber (6) is confined by a pipe (4), where the ignition device is arranged at an end (5) of the pipe. An end (8) of the pipe is adjacent to the housing. The chambers are separated from each other such that no parts of the propellant end up at the end (8) of the pipe before ignition of the propellant in the chamber (9).
