PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform which can obtain a porous preform for an optical fiber in which variation of characteristics is reduced in the longitudinal direction by a simple device. SOLUTION: In the method for producing an optical fiber preform where while depositing glass fine particles produced by a burner at the tip of a starting material, the starting material is pulled up so as to form a porous preform for an optical fiber, the position of a deposition growing part for the glass fine particles deposited on the starting material is detected by a position detection means, the pulling-up of the starting material is performed based on the detected position, and the position of the deposition growing part is changed on the basis of the change of the pulling-up speed of the starting material.
