<p>The present invention provides a method and a system for the use of an actually available catalytic performanceηact for an exhaust treatment device comprising at least one substrate with catalytic coating. A physical catalytic performanceηphys of the exhaust treatment device, before it is brought into operation, is determined based on at least one flow F and on a temperature T for the exhausts. A degradationηdeg of the physical catalytic performance, after the exhaust treatment device is brought into operation, is then determined based on at least one accumulated use of engine speed,ωand torque M for the engine. The actually available catalytic performanceηact is determined by reducing the physical catalytic performanceηphys by the degradationηdeg,ηact =ηphys -ηdeg.
