Methods, devices, and computer programs for improving streaming of partitioned timed media data

Receiving, transmitting and generating streamed timed media data in temporal segments partitioned into timed samples comprising subsamples, the timed media data transmitted as at least two media segment files each comprising an independently encapsulated component, further comprising a manifest comprising a dependency item of information indicating dependency relations between components and a dependency characterization item of information for interpreting the information. A selected component is used to reconstruct a portion of the partitioned timed media data to generate a playable media representation bit-stream. Scalability layers and spatial information may be used. Dependency characterization may be attributes and may indicate a sub-stream conforming to the HEVC video coding standard for use by an encoder or decoder. The media presentation description (MPD) manifest may comply with the DASH standard (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) and comprises at least two different descriptions of one component. The invention relates to HTTP streaming of user-selected regions of interest (ROI) in compressed video streams by extending MPDs. Streaming client devices can be informed that media presentation videos provide spatial access and, by using MPD information, streaming clients can dynamically switch to a specific spatial area of a video and dynamically switch back to full-frame video.
