[Also in Group XXX] In a scoop arm machine of the type in which the scoop 1 is pivotally mounted on the end of an arm 2 itself pivotally mounted on a vehicle 4, the engine 11 of which propels the vehicle as well as providing the means to raise and lower the arm, the centre of gravity of the scoop is to the rear of its pivot supports 1a so that there is always a tendency for it to rotate so that its open face is presented to the rear of the vehicle. This is prevented by cables 13 secured at 14 to the side cheeks of the scoop and to the vehicle structure 4 at 15, the cables being maintained under tension by the weight of the scoop. The arm 2 and the cables 13 with their points of attachment la, 3, 14 and 15 to the scoop and to the vehicle structure form a parallelogram linkage with the result that the open face of the scoop is maintained uppermost when the scoop is clear of the ground. Once the scoop contacts the ground, further downward movement of the arm 2 causes it to rotate so that the open face of the scoop is directed forward and is driven into the material by the vehicle. The scoop is of the bottom dumping type, the back of the scoop being a hinged plate 18b whose position relative to the remainder of the scoop can be regulated by a cable 19 to give a plurality of different size apertures to facilitate dumping.
