Textile fibres of vegetable origin are degummed by steeping them in a bath containing an alkyl ester of an aryl mono sulphonic acid, and are then bleached. In an Example, the fibres are steeped in a bath containing a solution of the nonyl ester of naphthalene monosulphonic acid for a few minutes at 50 DEG C for 2 hours in the cold, and are then subjected to bleaching with chlorine. The bleaching temperature may be considerably lower than is customary. The esters have the general formula Ar SO3 R, where R is an alkyl group and Ar is an aromatic group, e.g., phenyl or naphthyl. |
